Frequently Asked Questions

QUestions for NHS Applicants

1. What are the requirements to apply to NHS?

RMHS junior/senior students must have a cumulative weighted GPA of 3.7 or above and have completed a total of *10 volunteer service hours prior to submitting their application. Service needs to be from volunteering and participating and can have occurred at any point in the student’s high school years. Read this DOCUMENT to learn more about the qualifications for NHS.

2. What qualifies as leadership? (This refers to the first part of the NHS application)

There are various ways to exhibit leadership skills. This does not necessarily mean that you are the captain or president of a club. Consider times that you have led an activity or helped to organize an event where you demonstrated qualities such as organization, communication along with a high degree of commitment.  This can be at work, in school, or in the community.

3.  What qualifies as service? (This refers to the second part of the NHS application)

Typical activities which might qualify for service are those in which you provide a service to others and for which you have not been paid, such as a hospital volunteer, library aide, teacher aide, team manager, student trainer, community volunteer worker, etc. Service can be done at RMHS or in the community. Not all boxes need to be filled in if you have many hours within the same activity.

4. Where can I locate the  application to apply to NHS?

The application will be a google form link. The link to this form can be found on the home page of this website and will also be emailed to all students and parents who qualify to apply. You MUST be logged into your District 214 google account in order to open the form and fill it out.

The application google form automatically saves your information and is sent to me. The form must be completed by Sunday, September 11th,  2022. If you face any complications or find any issues with completing the form, contact club sponsor Laura Snyder (laura.snyder@d214.org) immediately to report the issue.

6. When do I find out if I am accepted to NHS?

You will be notified by email and by receive a letter of acceptance at school. If you do not receive either of these, then it means that you have not been accepted to NHS and if you are a junior, you should consider applying again your senior year. Please make sure to respond to this email/letter in order to accept your invitation.

7.  What if I have questions about applying, service hours, leadership or filling out my application?

8. What is the difference between an Inside service hour and an Outside service hour?

An Inside NHS service hour is any volunteer activity listed on our Google Drive sign up sheet or any activity/event that club sponsor Ms. Snyder has invited you to attend via email. Events that are considered "Inside hours" must be available to all NHS members. If you find an event that is in need of volunteers, please send the information to Mrs. Snyder so that you can post it to all members.

Outside service hours can be any volunteer hours that you complete such as M3, park district volunteering, etc. You must not be paid for volunteering. FMSC can be used as either an Inside or Outside Hour.

NOTE: Babysitting or helping your neighbor shovel their driveway is not considered a service hour, it is considered being a very nice person :)

9.  How many total service hours do we need per semester or per year?

A total of 8 hours per semester. At least 4 of the total hours during the school year must be service that is directly related to RMHS. Mrs. Snyder will send out Remind messages with service opportunities that are school related. Make sure to sign up for at least 4 hours of these to fulfill your requirement. At the end of each year you should have a total of 16 service hours. You MAY complete all 16 of your service hours doing RMHS service events.

10. Where do we look to find service hour opportunities?

After you are accepted to be a member of NHS, you will join our Remind group where information about service hours will be sent out regularly. You can also find service information on this website.   If your club or sport needs volunteers for an event, please email Ms. Snyder and we will add this service opportunity to our website. We are always looking for new events to share with our membership.

11. Where can I track my progress and see how many hours I have accumulated throughout the year?

We will use a Google form to track our service hours. This is an online form. You must use your D214 email to access the google form. You will be sent a link to this form upon acceptance as a NHS member and this form can be found on our website. After every volunteer/service activity, you will log your hours with this Google form. If you need help logging in or inputting your hours please see club sponsor Ms. Snyder or one or your NHS Board Members. These hours will be available to view/track on a Google Spreadsheet organized by NHS Board Members. This Spreadsheet will also be shared with you upon your acceptance as a NHS member.
